Day 263: Field Marshal Earl Roberts on his Arab Charger "Volonel"

Unveiled in 1916 on a prominent site opposite Park Gate at Kelvingrove Park,
this bronze sculpture by Harry Bates commemorates Field Marshall Earl Roberts
of Kandahar, Pretoria and Waterford (to give him his full title),
leader of a number of Imperial campaigns.
Considered to be the finest equestrian statue of its day,
it is an exact replica of a memorial to Roberts unveiled in Calcutta in 1898.

Day 249: Charing Cross Mansions

The first and grandest red sandstone tenement in the city, Charing Cross Mansions
was designed by JJ Burnett in 1891 and built for Robert Simpson & Son.

The "grande horloge" at the centre of the façade alludes to the passing of time and
the seasons and the clock face is bordered with the signs of the Zodiac.
It is surrounded by four crouching and standing figures representing
Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter, inspired by the sculpture of Michelangelo.
Above it are two reclining figures representing Commerce and Industry.
